Think a few typos on your résumé are the worst mistakes you can make? Think again. Even professionals who have been working for decades make mistakes when they look for a new job.
Here are five of the most severe:
1. Forgetting to keep it simple.
Even if you’re used to having people hang on to your every word, you need to re-train yourself to sum up your qualifications and skills quickly.
2. Being afraid to ask for help.
Pull out the Rolodex and call everyone in your network. You never know who’s privy to the perfect job for you.
3. Getting discouraged.
Don’t let a few rejections get you down. Keep your social calendar full, because the more people you meet, the better your chances are of finding the perfect opportunity.
4. Having an old, outdated or ineffective résumé.
Hiring managers receive a lot of résumés and only give each one a 15- to 30-second glance. Keep your résumé at just one page.
5. Neglecting to run a focused job search.
Treat your job search as a job, complete with goals and accountability.
Thank you so much! This is just the kind of advice I needed. Now I'll do my best to put this in the properest words in my letter :-)
