Another month of job growth
The U.S economy added 108,000 jobs in December, and unemployment hovered at a low 4.9 percent, according to data released Friday by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Although total employment was little changed in December – at about 142.8 million – it was still 2.6 million higher than a year ago, demonstrating the ongoing upswing in the job market.
Industries with notable gains include:
- Manufacturing – Added 18,000 jobs in December
- Healthcare – Added 21,000 jobs in December and 271,000 in 2005.
- Hospitality – Added 36,000 jobs in December.
- Construction – Added 246,000 jobs in 2005.
